MTV’s obsession with teen pregnancy detours next week into a realm not previously explored by the cable channel: Abortion.
This hot-button issue is the subject of “No Easy Decision,” a special scheduled to air Dec. 28 at an unusually late hour – 11:30 p.m. (10:30c). The special, first reported by Entertainment Weekly, seems to be an outgrowth of MTV’s increasing focus on teens and reproduction, exemplified by its two series on the subject: “Teen Mom” and “16 & Pregnant.”
This new abortion special even features at least one teen-aged girl from “16 and Pregnant” — Markai Durham — who has become pregnant again since appearing on that show and is thinking about ending the pregnancy.
Also featured in the show: Ubiquitous TV doc Drew Pinsky (“Celebrity Rehab,” “Sober House“) talking to teen-agers who have had abortions (27 percent of teen pregnancies end this way, according to EW).
Abortion is a pretty serious and divisive issue. Is it appropriate for MTV – the network of “Jersey Shore” and the aforementioned pregnancy shows – to suddenly start tackling this subject too?
