Comedians Kathy Griffin and Chelsea Handler have a message for anyone who takes what they say seriously: “You’re stupid.”

Appearing on “Chelsea Lately” Thursday Night, Kathy Griffin jumped right into her recent controversy over calling Bristol Palin fat while hosting “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops,” provoking the “stupid” assessment from the host.

Besides defending her comments in the name of comedy, Griffin also announced that despite recent speculation, she will be back on CNN’s New Year’s Eve with Anderson Cooper.

As for their respective controversies, Handler, who also made headlines recently for using an unladylike word to describe Angelina Jolie, said: “I don’t take anything I say seriously. I’m a ridiculous person.”

“I second that,” Griffin added.

After making her entrance, in skin-tight jeans and a purple sequined tank top, in case you were wondering, Griffin noted that she and the E! late-night host were both hot topics on “The View.”

“I made several scandalous jokes, as I like to do, and I stand by all of them,” Griffin said, to cheers. When she repeated her joke that recent “Dancing with the Stars” contestant Bristol Palin was “the white Precious,” she was greeted with laughter and applause – in contrast to the boos she received from the troops.

“By the way,” Handler clarified of Griffin’s line, “that’s hilarious.”

Griffin also noted that the joke was made in the context of a show of support for the armed forces.

“Unlike some of the haters that have come after me” — she coughed Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s name — “I have performed in Iraq and Afghanistan, and walked to the latrine on gravel with a flashlight and stood up in the cafeteria and told jokes, and I just think it’s ironic that someone would call me a bully.”

Handler agreed the label was misapplied to them. “Bullying is being a bully to someone who’s defenseless, a poor little person who’s done nothing wrong. Not the people who are a—holes,” she said.

Griffin also claimed that her skimpy attire was “part of the joke.”

“When I went out in a bikini at 50 years old, when I hosted that in front of 20,000 troops, I knew when I turned around and said ‘Watch my ass,’ I knew there was cellulite. So bring it. Obviously I don’t really walk around in a bikini and a bullet belt,” she said.

Griffin promoted a charity show she’s doing Dec. 16 and 17 at the Gibson Amphitheater to benefit The Trevor Project, toll free confidential suicide hotline for gay and questioning youth.

As for the New Year’s gig with Cooper, Griffin feigned innocence. “Really, it’s me trying to keep him in line. What you don’t know is that I’m the classy one and then during commercial breaks he’s extremely inappropriate,” she said.
