Elisabeth Hasselbeck launched a new salvo at Kathy Griffin Tuesday on ‘The View,’ calling the comedian a bully for remarks Griffin made about Bristol Palin’s weight.
And, while it’s usually Hasselbeck who assumes the role of Griffin’s chief critic on the ABC talk show, this time her opinion was echoed by co-host Sherri Shepherd, who disclosed that Griffin was once so mean to her that she was reduced to tears.
The topic of Kathy Griffin was raised by Whoopi Goldberg, who ushered in a discussion of the remarks Griffin made about Bristol during last Friday’s VH1 special ‘VH1 Divas Salute the Troops,’ a performance staged for U.S. military personnel at a base in Kuwait. Griffin was booed when she made fun of the way Bristol looked when she competed on ‘Dancing With the Stars.’
On ‘The View,’ Elisabeth admonished Griffin to get in sync with the rest of the world and stand up against bullying. “You know, it’s part of the age now . . . you see a lot of celebrities getting behind it. We stand by the idea that this antibullying theme should be really supported by everyone and to me it’s just a little challenging to not classify her as such,” said Hasselbeck, who couldn’t bring herself to utter Griffin’s name.
“Classify who as what?” asked Barbara Walters.
“The woman up there in the white dress!” answered Hasselbeck, indicating Griffin’s image on a screen behind them.
“As a bully,” Walters pressed.
“As a bully – or a wanna-bully, I call it. I just think it’s something that she needs to just cut out,” Hasselbeck said, as the ‘View’ studio audience applauded appreciatively. “Calling Bristol fat is OK? It’s not OK!”
That’s when Shepherd chimed in with her own opinion on Griffin. “I don’t know why people are surprised that Kathy would do this because this is how Kathy is,” Sherri said. “We worked together on [the NBC Brooke Shields sitcom] ‘Suddenly Susan’ and I’ve known Kathy for a long time, and she had me in tears when I first met her because I thought she was so mean to me. . . . She was very mean!”
On the VH1 show, Griffin said of Bristol, “She’s the only contestant in the history of [‘Dancing With the Stars’] to actually gain weight. She gained about 30 pounds week, I swear to God. She’s like the white Precious!”
Hasselbeck previously went after Griffin earlier this year when Griffin seemed to label the daughters of Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown as “prostitutes.” Hasselbeck called her “scum.”
In her stand-up act, Kathy Griffin has long trafficked in making pointed remarks about celebrities on TV and in the news. Indeed, the foibles of the famous are a centerpiece of her concert performances and her Bravo reality series ‘My Life on the D-List.’

But are we losing our taste for this kind of cutting-edge comedy? Is Kathy’s act a form of bullying? Should she listen to Elisabeth Hasselbeck and “cut it out”?
