A ‘Glee‘ club without Rachel, Finn, Kurt or Mercedes? Cover your ears if you think that sounds like a bad idea, because show creator Ryan Murphy is saying that’s just what will happen someday on the high school-set Fox show.
Murphy told Australia’s Herald Sun that new (read: younger) cast members will be added and the current group will eventually graduate – because that worked so well for ‘Saved By the Bell’ and ’90210.’
“Every year we’re going to populate a new group,” Murphy said. “There’s nothing more depressing than a high schooler with a bald spot.” (Somewhere, Ian Ziering is wincing).
“I think you have to be true to the fact that here is a group of people who come and go in these teachers’ lives — they graduate and they’re gone,” Murphy said. “When some of them finish their run at high school it will be very teary episodes.”
Murphy pointed to this season’s addition of Sam (Chord Overstreet) as evidence a fresh face could be embraced. “I was concerned about (graduating cast members) because those kids caught on so quickly – but I think one of the things I’m very happy we’ve been able to do this years is we’ve brought in new characters.”
“I didn’t know if people would want those characters (like Sam) but they do.”
What do you think about the graduation plans? Will the continued presence of Mr. Shue and Sue Sylvester be enough to keep it ‘Glee’-ful?
