“Charming” only gets you so far in the cold, hard TV landscape. As such, The CW’s ratings-challenged ‘Life Unexpected‘ will not be getting a full-season order, and will produce just 13 episodes for its sophomore run.

Though the network is theoretically/diplomatically not making a decision on ‘LUX’s longterm future until May, series creator Liz Tigelaar was bearish on the possibility when TVAddict.com ran such a scenario by her in September. “The CW is not going to only pick up 13 and then pick us up again next year,” she ventured. “Or at least I doubt [they would].”

‘Life Unexpected’ is one of few returning shows to be in limbo this fall. (Sister soaper ‘One Tree Hill’ was guaranteed 22 episodes last month, when The CW also granted same to first-year series ‘Hellcats’ and ‘Nikita.) In fact, CBS’ ‘Medium’ – which just had its seventh season downsized to 13 episodes – may be the only other non-newbie legitimately fearing the Reaper. Even perennial bubble show ‘Chuck‘ has already had its season supersized by NBC, to 24 awesome eps.

Instead, all eyes have been on this fall’s crop of new programs.

To date, four newbies have been decidedly dissed: ABC’s ‘My Generation’ and ‘The Whole Truth,’ Fox’s ‘Lone Star,’ and NBC’s ‘Outlaw.’

Two New ABC Shows Get Full Seasons, But Not ‘Whole Truth’

Still riding the fence are ABC’s ‘Detroit 1-8-7′ (which thus far has earned an order for five additional scripts), NBC’s ‘Undercovers’ (which got an order for four more scripts) and ‘School Pride‘ (working off a 7-episode order), and Fox’s ‘Running Wilde’ (no lifelines tendered as of yet).

On the cable side, FX’s ‘Terriers‘ is still scrambling to find an audience worthy of its excellence.

Ratings Report Card: Which New Shows Are Hot? Which Are Not?

Already renewed for full freshman seasons, lest anyone get panicky in Comments, in alphabetical order: ‘Better With You,’ ‘Blue Bloods,’ ‘Chase,’ ‘The Defenders,’ ‘The Event,’ ‘Hawaii Five-0,’ ‘Hellcats,’ ‘Law & Order: LA,’ ‘Mike & Molly,’ ‘Nikita,’ ‘No Ordinary Family,’ ‘Outsourced,’ ‘Raising Hope’ and ‘$#*! My Dad Says.’

If you could save any ONE of the freshman shows still in limbo, which would it be – ‘Detroit 1-87,’ ‘Running Wilde,’ ‘School Pride,’ ‘Terriers’ or ‘Undercovers’? Or “None of the above”?
