Seven-time Emmy winner Ed Asner is pulling a Betty White and returning to primetime TV in a colorful (read: outrageous octogenarian) supporting role.

Much as White, another ‘Mary Tyler Moore‘ alum, did with TV Land’s ‘Hot In Cleveland,’ Asner has joined the cast of ‘Working Class,’ CMT’s first-ever scripted comedy. With Melissa Peterman (‘Reba’) starring as a blue-collar single mom who relocated to a well-to-do suburb, Asner will play a misanthropic neighbor, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Brad Johnson, CMT’s senior VP of development, says the cabler is “thrilled” to have the veteran actor on board, noting, “Asner is synonymous with legendary television, and we know he will bring a classic comedic edge to our fresh family sitcom.”

In addition to his work on ‘Mary Tyler Moore,’ for which he collected three Emmys, Asner starred on the spin-off ‘Lou Grant,’ where he netted another two statuettes.

‘Working Class’ marks Asner’s first series regular gig since 2006′s ‘Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.’ His recent TV guest-star work has included episodes of ‘The Sarah Silverman Program,’ ‘CSI: NY’ and ‘Andy Barker, P.I.’

He also does much voice work, for TV shows such as ‘The Cleveland Show’ and ‘The Boondocks,’ and the award-winning film ‘Up‘ (watch online).

CMT’s ‘Working Class’ is scheduled to launch its 12-episode first season in January 2011.
