Does Justin Timberlake have a chance to sip tea with Whoopi Goldberg and Mel Brooks as a member of the esteemed EGOT club?

What is the EGOT? It’s the grand slam of entertainment awards: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. It is oft-referenced by Tracy Jordan on ’30 Rock,’ and only 12 entertainers in the history of the industry are card-carrying members.

The 29-year-old was merely a molecule in the industry when he got cozy with a perkier Britney Spears on the Mickey Mouse Club in 1993. He then dominated the pop charts and excited teenage girls later in the decade with ‘N Sync. When the boy group disbanded in 2002 Timberlake focused on a solo career. Ironically, 2002 is the last year that someone was bestowed with an EGOT. Whoopi Goldberg pulled it off by claiming the Daytime Emmy for her role in ‘Beyond Tara: The Extraordinary Life of Hattie McDaniel,’ and a Tony as a producer in the Broadway musical Thoroughly Modern Millie, in the same year.

Justin had his hands wrapped around two Grammys in 2004 after releasing Justified and snagged an Emmy in 2007 for his performance of classic love song ‘D–k in a Box’ with Andy Samberg on ‘Saturday Night Live.’ The following year he walked away with two more Grammys for his landmark album FutureSex/LoveSounds. Two albums and a sophomoric but hilarious SNL digital short later and ‘dudes’ around the world weren’t afraid to express their man crushes.

He popped up on the season premiere of SNL last weekend to smooch Amy Poehler in the monologue (it was nothing short of tasteful), and appear in a telling skit with Andy Samberg.

A canvas chair to canvas chair talk show cleverly titled ‘Actor II Actor’ pitted Timberlake against a pensive Samberg who just wanted to know, “if he was ever going to make music again?” Justin stormed off the stage in mock disgust but you could see the glimmer of the Academy Awards in his eyes.

Timberlake plays Napster whiz kid Shawn Fanning in the red hot ‘Social Network’ (opening nationwide today), which is already atop several early lists for Best Picture. There have even been whispers around the Interwebs of Justin being nominated for a Supporting Actor Oscar. Could he have ¾ of the EGOT before he turns 30?

Last night Timberlake stopped by ‘The Daily Show‘ to plug the film. Jon Stewart referred to him as “scary talented…with the singing, the dancing, and the acting.”

“It makes you very unlikeable,” Stewart joked. JT responded with humility. “I woke up one morning and said I wanted to be as unlikeable as possible. I actually move from thing to thing so people won’t find out I’m moderately talented at each one of them.”

Timberlake has several more acting projects in production slated for release in the next two years. He’ll be showing up in multiplexes longer than the 3-D fad. If he doesn’t take home a  golden man this awards season, he still has chances in the near future.

Think the Tony is going to be a tough? Can it really be that hard for someone with such immense talent? A musical would be too easy at this point for the curly kid from Memphis. We all know what he is capable of when the lights are low and he is in front of thousands. Justin needs to go for the dramatic. How about a two-man play titled ‘Bye Bye Boy Band’ about the relationship between JT and former ‘boy band guru’ Ron Perlman? Philip Seymour Hoffman could play the disgraced former manager and Justin could play the award-winning role of a lifetime: himself.

Will JT be the next celebrity to EGOT? The campaign begins now.
