Nearly a year after word first broke that TNT was pondering a return to Southfork, the cabler has greenlit production on the pilot for a new ‘Dallas‘ that would explore the lives, loves and exploits of the Ewing family.

‘Dallas’ Remake Takes Texas-Sized Leap Forward

Turner’s official press release, which announced the order of four total TNT/TBS pilots, reads as follows:

Executive producer Cynthia Cidre, writer of the acclaimed film ‘The Mambo Kings’ and creator/executive producer of the TV series ‘Cane,’ has crafted an update of the long-running series about the Ewings of Southfork, whose betrayals, jealousies and passions have made them famous. The story focuses on the offspring of bitter rivals and brothers JR and Bobby Ewing, who clash over the future of the Ewing dynasty while the fate of Southfork itself weighs in the balance. This project, based upon the iconic series created by David Jacobs, comes to TNT from Warner Horizon Television.

At the time that this new ‘Dallas’ was first spoken of, the rumor was that original series stars Larry Hagman, Linda Gray and Patrick Duffy had been approached to appear in the pilot. A Warner TV rep did not immediately respond to Fancast’s request for an update on any such possible encores.

‘CHiPs’ Is The Latest ’70s Show Heading For A Reboot

Also in the works at Turner: ‘Perception,’ in which an eccentric neuroscientist uses his unique outlook to help the government solve complex cases; an Allen Loeb-penned adaptation of the novel The Rabbit Factory, about a recently widowed police detective and his newly married partner; and the TBS dramedy ‘Brain Trust,’ which revolves around a down-on-his-luck police detective who gets unconventional help from a trio of think-tank geniuses.

‘Rockford Files’ Reboot Lives On – But With a New Star

TNT’s possible return to ‘Dallas,’ which ran for 13 seasons and gave TV the iconic “Who Shot JR”? cliffhanger, represents the latest in a series of remakes/reimaginings/updates of old series. Coming to TV this fall we have CBS’ ‘Hawaii Five-O’ and The CW’s ‘Nikita,’ while new takes on ‘Charlie’s Angels,’ ‘The Rockford Files‘ and ‘CHiPs‘ are all on the drawing board at assorted networks.
