One of ‘American Idol‘s worst-kept secrets is now confirmed: After two seasons on the judging panel, Kara DioGuardi is vacating her chair.

The announcement by Fox arrived on a Friday evening leading into a long holiday weekend – aka the “death zone” of the news world, where unpleasant stories hope not to be disseminated or dissected. And yet here we are.

‘American Idol’ Expands Its Search, J.Lo Back in the Game?

“I felt like I won the lottery when I joined ‘American Idol’ two years ago, but I feel like now is the best time to leave,” DioGuardi said in a statement which suggests that – despite numerous reports elaborating otherwise – this parting of the ways was her decision. Hmm.

“I look forward to my next challenge, and want to thank everyone who has supported me,” she added. “All the best to everyone on Season 10!”

In his own statement, ‘Idol’ creator Simon Fuller hailed Kara as “one of the world’s best songwriters. She has been passionate and committed to ‘Idol’ over the last two seasons. I will miss having her on the show, but I look forward to working with her in music for many years to come.”

Returning ‘Idol’ Producer Lythgoe Sorry Ellen Departed

In recent weeks (or has it been months? Feels like many months), the speculation has been that DioGuardi would not return for ‘Idol’s 10th season, so as to accommodate a significant overhaul of the judges’ table. Though nothing has been double super-secret confirmed, it is likely that with three judges (including figurehead Simon Cowell and relative newbie Ellen DeGeneres) out of the mix, Jennifer Lopez and perhaps also Steven Tyler will join the show.

Maybe those announcements are being saved for December 24?
