The little people who became one of the biggest families on TV are calling it a day. The sixth season of TLC’s ‘Little People, Big World,’ premiering September 6, will the show’s swan song, the cabler has announced.
‘Little People, Big World’ introduced us to the spunky Roloff family, three of whom (including dad Matt and mom Amy) are dwarfs. Together with their four children (one of whom has dwarfism), the Roloffs live on an Oregon pumpkin farm. Millions watched in fascination over the years as the Roloffs lived lives not unlike most of our own, despite their occasional struggles to cope in a world built for taller people.
“The show has been an amazing and unforgettable experience for our entire family,” Matt and Amy said in a joint statement. “Over the past five years, we have shared the most rewarding journey that will forever be in our hearts. We are gearing up to begin new and exciting adventures as a family.”
Premiering in 2006, ‘Little People, Big World’ helped usher in the current era of unscripted reality shows, seen mainly on TLC, that focus on families and characters with unusual characteristics – dwarfs, giants, conjoined twins, the morbidly obese, and families with 10 or more children.
“The Roloffs have touched the hearts and enlightened the minds of millions of people worldwide,” said TLC President Eileen O’Neill, announcing the end of the line for TLC’s ‘Little People.’ “Its groundbreaking premiere introduced us all to the realities of being a little person, and we thank Matt and Amy and their family for their courage and willingness to share their lives.”
The new, upcoming season starts where last season ended, in the aftermath of Matt collapsing in his home office, leading to renewed concern about
his health. The incident has Matt and Amy reassessing their lives. As a result, Amy tries to get in shape with the help of a personal trainer and Matt goes skydiving.
And they’re also starting to think about the future, and whether they’ll stay down on the pumpkin farm. Matt skydiving? Sounds like must-see TV to us. Will you be watching?
