Will Forte will not be a part of the ‘Saturday Night Live‘ ensemble when NBC’s late-night sketch series premieres its 36th season on September 25.

The parting of the ways between Forte – whose most recent and memorable contribution to the ‘SNL’ oeuvre was his depiction of the MacGyver-like “MacGruber” – is amicable, a source tells the New York Times.

Forte’s other noteworthy ‘SNL’ characterizations include Gilly’s patience-tested teacher and Weekend Update contributor Tim Calhoun.

An eight-season veteran of ‘SNL,’ Forte plans to pursue other projects. In recent years, he has guested on ‘30 Rock‘ (where he plays the drag impersonator boyfriend of Jane Krakowski’s Jenna) and appeared in such films as, well, ‘MacGruber,’ which bombed with an opening weekend pittance of $4.1 million.

NBC declined to comment on the Times‘ story, saying that ‘SNL’s Season 36 cast won’t be set until Labor Day.
