‘Dora’s Iconic Backpack Gets A Celebrity Twist

Dora is looking good for 10.

For the Nickelodeon show’s 10th anniversary, celebrity-designed ‘Dora the Explorer’ backpacks were unveiled at Macy’s in New York Tuesday and are available for auction online.

Celebrity designers include Jessica Alba, Matthew McConaughey, Salma Hayek Pinault, LeBron James, Eva Longoria Parker, Sheryl Crow, Faith Hill, Slash, Shakira, John Leguizamo, Heidi Klum and Drew Brees.

“I love watching Dora the Explorer with my kids. She is a terrific role model who inspires kids around the world,” says designer and new Miami Heat player James, who has two young sons.

The backpacks can be purchased at www.charitybuzz.com/auctions/dora through Sept. 2. Money benefits the non-profit Children’s Defense Fund, Nickelodeon’s partner in its “Beyond the Backpack” campaign to promote school readiness. There are also backpacks for sale outside the U.S., which benefit international children’s charities.

Materials include soft metallic leather, rubber, textured leather, Swarovski crystals, ultra-suede, and Dora-style charms. Themes include Goth, punk rock, and preppie.

“I think that Dora is a positive role model for children,” says designer Alba, who is a CDF supporter and has one daughter, Honor, 2.

‘Dora’s’ 10th anniversary kicks off Sunday Aug. 15 at 8 p.m. on Nickelodeon with an hourlong movie, ‘Dora’s Big Birthday Adventure,’ featuring Leguizamo’s voice in addition to Rosie Perez and Hector Elizondo.

A 12-minute ‘Dora’ 10th anniversary tribute documentary follows, looking at the show’s cultural and educational impact. It features commentary from industry experts, show creators, kids, and celebrities including Hayek Pinault, Shakira, Perez, as well as CNN’s Anderson Cooper and Soledad O’Brien, and ‘The View‘s’ Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd.

The Nickelodeon show, which provides a service to young viewers through bilingual education, started airing in 2000 after premiering as a pilot in 1999. ‘Dora’ has generated billions in revenue, including through toys and other products.

Adds designer and New Orleans Saints quarterback Brees: “The inspiration behind the backpack came from a Dora the Explorer book that [my wife and I] read to our son, Baylen. He loves pointing out the characters in the book and trying to sound out the words of the objects he sees.”
