Accepting that Alec Baldwin will likely take the stage, again, and that Ashton Kutcher will be called upon, again, Fancast wanted to present NBC’s ‘Saturday Night Live‘ with a laundry list of “fresher faces” we’d like to see host the iconic sketch show during the coming season.
Already, our No. 1 pick – ‘Glee’ scene-stealer and improv impresario Jane Lynch – is rumored to have made a date with ‘SNL,’ so that’s a sign of progress in a world where Kate Gosselin appears on the Emmys and Levi Johnston runs for mayor of any city.
In addition to Lynch, here are some other TV-centric types we long to see make their Studio 8H debut.
THE PRINCESS OF COMEDY: Lest anyone doubt that Carrie Fisher (of HBO’s upcoming ‘Wishful Drinking’ special) ever lost her out-of-this-world sense of humor, the ‘Star Wars’ alumna was in rare form at this month’s TCA summer press tour, cracking up the crowd of weary press with riotous one-liners, juicy anecdotes and yes, even, a “Princess Leia” wig.
‘FAMILY’ GUYS: It’s easy to pitch Ty Burrell, who seems headed for an Emmy win later this month. But we’d be just as jazzed to see his ‘Modern Family‘ “kid brother,” Rico Rodriguez, suit up, stay up past bedtime and work his precocious magic.
‘COMMUNITY’ JEST: What Joel McHale hinted at with his work on ‘The Soup,’ he has cemented as the lead of NBC’s ‘Community.’ Dude’s funny. And having chatted with the actor numerous times in person, we can attest that his lightning-fast wit would well serve the ‘SNL’ format.
THE ‘BAD’ BOY: Before his Emmy-winning dramatic run as ‘Breaking Bad’s Walter White, Bryan Cranston cooked up laughs. And he did it well, on shows such as ‘Seinfeld’ and of course ‘Malcolm In The Middle.’ Bring on the meth-making Digital Short!
A BLOODY GOOD IDEA: Ian Somerhalder is known for playing brooders on ‘Lost’ and now ‘The Vampire Diaries,’ yet we have a feeling that he wouldn’t suck at all sinking his teeth into comedy. Act fast, ‘SNL,’ and Ian would probably love to send up the careless goofballs at BP.
THE PRESIDENT OF CORPORATE SYNERGY: NBC would be remiss not to enlist someone form its own ranks to host ‘SNL’ and thus promote primetime content. Of the Peacock’s new feathers, ‘The Event’s got buzz, so we cast our vote for Blair Underwood, who plays POTUS on the suspense-drama.
THE TALKING HEADS: Brian Williams scored a win as a onetime ‘SNL’ host, so what’s to lose by inviting MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow to seize the stage? One catch: She must co-host alongside ‘The View’s Elisabeth Hasselbeck. And… with that caveat, we made this particular suggesting enter Impossible territory.
WILL POWER!: Assuming that Amy Poehler is plenty busy with their brand-new baby and, you know, starring on ‘Parks and Recreation,’ let’s urge her hubby, Will Arnett (now of Fox’s ‘Running Wilde’), to fill in. Surely he knows the way to 30 Rock?
THE BETTY WHITE GENDER BENDER: The idea: Take last season’s Mother’s Day-themed outing, and flip the gender. So instead of Betty White, we get veteran funny man Dick Van Dyke. (I see a skit revolving around just an ottoman.) And instead of a chorus of female ‘SNL’ alumni, Dick gets an assist from the likes of Mike Myers, David Spade and Jon Lovitz. Where do we create a Facebook page?
Now it is your turn, Fancast fans: Who would you love to see host ‘Saturday Night Live’?
