Mary Kate Olsen says she “wouldn’t wish her upbringing on anyone.”
The 24-year-old actress-turned-fashion designer gives a rare interview about her difficult childhood in a cover story for the September issue of Marie Claire magazine.
Describing her childhood stardom, Olsen says she and her twin sister Ashley were like “little monkey performers.”
The former child star, who grew up on TV’s ‘Full House,’ tells Marie Claire, “I look at old photos of me, and I don’t feel connected to them at all… I would never wish my upbringing on anyone…but I wouldn’t take it back for the world.”
The troubled half of the supertwins says the intense fame and the monkey performing led her to an eating disorder (she was treated for anorexia in 2004), a few hard-partying years–and unwanted tabloid attention.
“I think it’s really important to be able to talk when something’s wrong,” Mary Kate says. “I learned at a really young age that if you don’t talk about it, it can drive you insane.”
But her ‘other half’ Ashely remains Mary Kate’s main ally and biggest support.
“It’s really helpful to have another half–we’re constantly checking in with each other,” Olsen says of her bond with her sister.
Multi-millionaire moguls by the time they were teens (the Olsen twins are reportedly worth an estimated $100 million), Olsen has had the luxury of doing what she loves.
While she hasn’t retired from acting entirely, Mary Kate is all about her career as a fashion designer right now. She has her own label called The Row and a joint venture with her sister, the Olsenboye line at JC Penney.
“I still read scripts, and if something great comes along, that’s great … but this is my day job,” Olsen says. “The Row is where I go every day.”
“It’s kind of like a mask to hide behind,” she adds.
