“I probably have a new perspective on everything,” cancer survivor Maura Tierney told reporters Sunday in Los Angeles.

The 45-year-old actress, who battled breast cancer over the last year, is now in remission and starring in the new Jerry Bruckheimer series, ‘The Whole Truth.’

Tierney admits she “wasn’t really thinking about doing another show,” but says she’s feeling “good.”

“I’m healthy, so that sort of was that,” Tierney says matter of fact. “And then I read the script, and I liked it. So that was that. That’s how I decided.”

And she should feel good about it–the part was written just for her.

Tierney and executive producer Tom Donaghy have been friends for over 20 years–they attended NYU together–and Donaghy had his old college pal in mind when he developed the role.

“I knew Maura had the elegance and wit,” Donaghy told TV critics, “so I wrote it with her talents in mind, never thinking she would be available.”

“I really responded to the character that Tom wrote, I guess because [he] wrote it for me … My ego’s not involved there at all,” Tierney said. Donaghy explained he wanted to create a female character who “can be strong and also feminine.”

“It’s a priority for me to work with people I know and trust,” she added.

The ABC legal drama, which depicts cases from the perspectives of both the defense and the prosecution, stars ‘ER‘ alum and ‘Numb3rs‘ man Rob Morrow.

Tierney plays a Deputy Bureau Chief in the Manhattan District Attorney’s office whose main courtroom foe (Morrow) is her old Yale law school buddy, a rising star criminal defense attorney.

The leading female role was originally cast with ‘Nip/Tuck’s Joely Richardson, who dropped out of the project to “spend more time with her family,” after the loss of her sister Natasha and aunt Lynn in the last 15 months.

Last year, Tierney was forced to give up her role on NBC’s ‘Parenthood‘ after she was diagnosed with cancer and ultimately replaced by Lauren Graham of ‘Gilmore Girls.’

‘The Whole Truth’ premieres Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 10 p.m./EST on ABC.
