Opening Wide: Dinner for Schmucks, Charlie St. Cloud, Cats & Dogs

Here’s what’s new at the multiplex this weekend. Steve Carell schmucks it up in Dinner for Schmucks, while Zac Efron gives us a touching story about grief and letting go as Charlie St. Cloud. Then, there is Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore, a sequel to a movie that came out back in 2001. In selected cities, Robert Duvall is back in form as a mysterious and ornery backwoods hermit in Get Low, while Kevin Kline is a misogynist escort in The Extra Man. Paul Rudd is an upwardly mobile young executive who gets his chance to join the upper echelon of his company, only to find out that there is an initiation dinner to which he is expected to bring the biggest idiot he can find so the rich people can laugh at them. Initially he’s opposed to the idea, but then Steve Carell enters his world and the serendipity of meeting this schmuck is too great to ignore.

Zac Efron was a promising young sailor whose entire life was derailed by the tragedy that took his younger brother Sam from this world. Years later, however, he finds he can still see Sam regularly, and even talk and play catch with him while everyone around him worries about him. When potential romance arises with a chance to regain the life he once led, he has to learn how to let go of the past.

Robert Duvall stars in this early Oscar contender as an odd rural hermit named Felix Bush, the tales of whom have become legend, and when he comes into town and asks for a funeral while he’s still alive so he can hear all those stories, an opportunistic businessman (Bill Murray) sees the chance to make a lot of money off of that legend.


The Extra Man

Paul Dano stars as Louis Ives, who considers himself a hero in an F. Scott FItzgerald novel and who must escape an embarassing incident at Princeton that leaves him starting his life over in New York. When he rents a room from Henry Harrison (Kevin Kline), an eccentric playwright who doubles as a social escort for wealthy women, he is slowly drawn into that strange life. Also starring Katie Holmes.
