NBC reboot of ‘The Rockford Files‘ lives on – but Dermot Mulroney‘s status as the lead does not.

“We are actually redeveloping [the series], and we will be reshooting the pilot,” NBC entertainment president Angela Bromstad told Fancast at Friday’s TCA press tour.

As for Mulroney (‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’) starring as private eye Jim Rockford – the role originated on that ’70s show by James Garner – Bromstad told us they will be “recasting, yes.”

The Peacock’s new take on ‘Rockford Files’ was originally developed for the coming fall TV season, yet failed to make the line-up when NBC showed its hand at the May upfronts.

What went wrong with the first stab at the reboot? Sources told New York Magazine that the original pilot came off looking “dated — and not in a cool, retro way.”

What’s more, there was talk that Mulroney – who from the get-go was considered a questionable choice by critics – “simply didn’t pop.”
