First the New York Times asked the question. Then ABC News’ Diane Sawyer…and now us, “Who is Don Draper?”
This question is both philosophic and pointed, and it’s one that fans of ‘Mad Men’ will see answered starting with the premiere of this widely-acclaimed series’ fourth season this Sunday on AMC.
For three seasons, Draper, played with a cool, carefully measured tone by Jon Hamm, has stood front and center as the prototypical 1960s Madison Ave. ad exec living, reflecting and selling the American dream. He had it all – the great job, a blindingly blond trophy wife and martini lunches topped with extra-marital affairs.
However, last season ended with Draper embracing change and uncertainty.
Bidding goodbye to the security of his old job as creative director at Sterling Cooper, Don’s now a founding partner at a new agency, Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce – and has also bitterly ended his marriage. The Times called his rallying cry to his new team in last season’s final episode “the most exhilarating moment of the season.”
Now, a year later, we still ask, “Who is Don Draper?”
