The pregnancy of series lead Becki Newton, paired with a bit of backstage business, has prompted NBC to postpone the premiere of the new romantic-comedy series ‘Love Bites.’

In its place, NBC will relaunch an original-flavor, non-celebrity edition of ‘The Apprentice.’

Getting pushed back to midseason is but the latest wrinkle for ‘Love Bites.’ Originally, Newton (‘Ugly Betty’) and Jordana Spiro were set to front the female-centric series. Spiro, though, had to drop out due to her obligation to the TBS comedy ‘My Boys,’ which is about to premiere its third season and in theory could be renewed for a fourth.

Newton, meanwhile, famously plays a virgin on ‘Love Bites,’ so neither incorporating nor attempting to shoot around her pregnancy proved thematically appropriate.

What’s more, series creator Cindy Chupack (‘Sex and the City’) recently elected to step down as show runner, citing “personal reasons” and that she can focus on penning episodes.

Add it all together, and you get a smart decision to delay ‘Love Bites’ to no later than January, and in turn bring back the classic edition of ‘The Apprentice.’
