Things were a little less ‘Hot In Cleveland‘ this week.

OK, things were markedly cooler. The TV Land series drew 3.4 million total viewers in its second time around the block, a drop of some 30 percent from its record-setting premiere.

Do you think this is simply matter of the show finding its true level after debuting to an etxremely hyped-up high? Is ‘Cleveland’ in actuality a 3-million viewer show, and not one that delivers a bigger audience than some episodes of NBC’s ‘Parks and Recreation’?

Is Cleveland, Ohio, Cool With ‘Hot In Cleveland’?

It could be that the series – starring Valerie Bertinelli (’One Day At a Time’), Jane Leeves (’Frasier’), Wendy Malick (’Just Shoot Me’) and ‘Golden’ gal Betty White – is too “retro” in feel for a TV audience that in recent years has been raised on crackling, fast-moving comedies such as ’30 Rock.’ As Cleveland Plain Dealer TV critic Mark Dawidziak notes, “‘Hot In Cleveland’ has a tremendous throwback feel to it. It feels like a 20-year-old sitcom.”

Yet that likely is by design, given its cast of “comeback kids” and a roster of guest stars that includes Carl Reiner, John Schneider and Huey Lewis. “They’re trying to be nostalgic in a way,” Dawidziak posits.
