It will be a very special Father’s Day for ‘American Idol‘ 2010 fourth-place finisher Michael “Big Mike” Lynche this weekend.
With a 4 1/2-month-old daughter, Laila Rose, Lynche has never been a dad on Father’s Day before.
“You see it differently when you think about your dad,” Lynche, 27, told Fancast Thursday in L.A., at an event to prepare for the 51-city ‘American Idol Live!’ tour, which kicks off July 1 in Detroit. “You know it’s interesting, saying you are a dad or a father, it’s something that I have always looked forward to. My wife’s dad is kind of like my dad. When I see him, I just see it differently. I am still very young, and very much on the go. I am just trying to reach my dreams and goals in life.”
Lynche continues, “It’s interesting, my baby is such an easy baby. It’s kind of hanging time. I guess when you get into discipline things, I feel more like dad. It’s just awesome. I get to provide for my family, my wife doesn’t have to work, and I’m doing something special.”
Lee DeWyze, Crystal Bowersox and this year’s other top six ‘Idol’ finalists will join Lynche on the densely paced tour, which circles North America until finishing Sept. 11 in Cleveland. His wife, Crista, will be joining him for part of the tour.
“They come out for a good portion,” Lynche says. “She is going to be flying in and out, and when I have days off, [we will spend time together]. It will be a lot of flying for her. I’m sure she will get sick of it by the end. The way we mapped it out, it kind of tails off, as we get towards the end. She will be missing me, and I will be missing her, but she will be tired of flying.”
Lynche was sent packing from ‘Idol’ May 12. He told reporters the following day that he “wasn’t surprised” to have been eliminated, but was proud to have to made it the top 4. Since ‘Idol,’ Lynche has been playing Mr. Mom while rehearsing during the day for the upcoming tour.
“I have been spending my time loving on my wife and hanging with my little baby,” Lynche says. “I was really looking forward to June because I knew we were going to get more down time. Even if we were rehearsed eight hours a day, I knew I would still get a decent amount of time with my family. It’s been so crazy. Our rehearsal schedule is very lax. The fam is good. It’s been cool being here for a little while during the day, and then I get home. I’m not even here every day. It’s been nice being regular, going to Target, going out to dinner, ordering room service, and just chilling.”
Asked what he would like to do for Father’s Day 2010, Lynche says, “I haven’t even thought about it. It was just my birthday. I don’t know. I guess I will let my wife plan it. I would love to just sit at home.”
