Dublin native Jason O’Mara is finalizing a deal to star in ‘Terra Nova,’ the prehistoric-flavored action-drama Steven Spielberg is executive-producing for Fox.

‘Terra Nova’ is centered on the Shannons, a circa-2149 family that is sent way, way, way back in time – some 85 meeeelion years – in a desperate bid to save the future of humanity.

O’Mara (‘Life On Mars,’ ‘In Justice’) will play Jim Shannon, the family’s patriarch who has a checkered past. Though seriously, if you want to talk checkered pasts, have a word with any randomly selected velociraptor.

Fox and Spielberg (appearing via video) teased ‘Terra Nova’ at last month’s upfronts, regaling reporters with their vision and the scope of the series, punctuated by some impressive artists’ renderings of how the show (and it’s controversially colorful dinosaurs) might look.

Due to the enormous production design and CGI what not involved in bringing the series to life, Fox billed it as a “midseason” offering yet left the door open for a possibly later bow.

Alex Graves, who has helmed the pilots for ‘Fringe’ and ‘The Nine,’ is on board to direct ‘Terra Nova’s premiere.
