Confirming previous reports, AMC has announced ‘Breaking Bad’ has been renewed for a fourth season. The news comes hot on the heels of Sunday night’s season three finale, which a press release boasts was the highest rated episode in series history.

Earlier this season, series creator Vince Gilligan confessed to Fancast that he’d like to be granted an end date for Emmy-winning drama. “The main thing I would like in the future of Breaking Bad is to have a solid idea of when the series is ending,” he said.

“If we knew when the show were to end I think it would make for a better series finale because our writers could write for a specific idea. My hope for the future is to know exactly how long we have left. If you think about it, it’s sort of like Walter White’s situation upon learning that he has terminal cancer, the blast of clarity that he receives learning how long he has left. A similar blast of clarity would help my writers and I do our jobs better. That would be my wish going forward in the future.”

More from AMC’s release:

“AMC’s ‘Breaking Bad’ is one of the most layered and intense dramas on television today,” said Joel Stillerman, Senior Vice President of original programming, production and digital content. “The critical acclaim and strong audience growth we’ve seen in season three reinforce that this is the kind of exceptional original storytelling AMC has become known for providing to audiences.  Vince Gilligan and his team deliver bold storylines that truly push the psychic envelope and create a mesmerizing, exhilarating television experience.  We look forward to an incredible fourth season.”

‘Breaking Bad’ is nominated for four Television Critics Association Awards.
