In a piece of news that may rankle some fans of ABC’s ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ it has been announced that Dr. April Kepner is a keeper, now that Sarah Drew has been upped to series regular status for Season 7.
Like Jesse Williams (who also has been promoted to series regular), Drew made her ‘Grey’s’ debut last October. One of the Mercy West transplants, April was rather benign until she made a fatal blunder in diagnosing a patient that got her fired.
Dr. Kepner surprisingly returned later in the season as an assistant of sorts to new chief of surgery Derek (Patrick Dempsey). In that capacity, she began developing a slightly unhealthy attachment to McDreamy, one that gave Mer (Ellen Pompeo) flashbacks to her own days of pining for the swoon-worthy neurosurgeon.
That twist begged Mer/Der fans to ally against April, who already had one strike against her as one of the Mercy West “intruders.”
And the third strike? April unwittingly served as a catalyst to the shooting that nearly ended Derek’s life in the Season 6 finale.
“[Sarah] did an outstanding job” in the season finale, “but her character has been annoying and unbelievable from Day 1,” says Fancast reader Andrea. “She is completely unbelievable as a surgical intern (let alone an MD).”
Fancast reader Tracy goes so far as to say, “I was hoping they would kill off April. However I think they are keeping her around to cause problems for Meredith and Derek.”
But while the character may leave viewers unsettled, many point out that Drew, an alumna of TV’s beloved ‘Everwood,’ does have acting chops, as displayed in the season-finale monologue in which April reflected on her childhood on a farm.
‘Grey’s’ fans, how would you like to see April figure into Season 7?
