Bret Michaels, who until a couple months ago had been relegated to a punch line thanks to his starring role on a VH1 dating show, now looks poised to make a run for no less than Simon Cowell‘s vacated chair on America’s most watched TV program.

“I can’t say this is true yet, cause I don’t know,” Poison’s front man told the crowd at a Friday concert in Biloxi, Miss. “Next year they asked me to possibly be the judge on ‘American Idol.’”

Why ‘American Idol’ Will Never Be the Same

Just days after being treated for a brain hemorrhage and showing up for the ‘Celebrity Apprentice‘ finale (where he walked away a winner), Michaels performed on the May 27 ‘Idol’ finale. Afterward, both he and Cowell were asked about the possibility of one replacing the other.

“I could fill in easily,” Michaels told ‘Access Hollywood‘ (as seen in the video below). The rocker though cautioned that as a performer, “I’m real musician-friendly and I wont be able to cut a lot of people down…. But I could give great constructive criticism.”

Cowell didn’t seem averse to having Michaels fill his shoes, noting, “He’s funny. He’s got experience. He’d be a good choice — and you saw the audience reaction [at the 'Idol' finale]. They love him.”

‘American Idol’ Finale Delivers a Series-Low Rating

Michaels might be just one of several people to step in for Simon. Rather than choose one individual to join Randy Jackson, Kara DioGuardi and Ellen DeGeneres on the dais, ‘Idol’ may work with a rotation of fourth judges, as they did this season during auditions, E! Online is hearing.

What do you think, ‘Idol’ fans? Is Bret a bona fide choice to replace Simon? Or is his popularity inflated these days due to recent headlines?
