First Sandra Bullock unloaded about the shocking and sad demise of her marriage in People magazine. Now it’s Jesse James’ turn.
In an emotional confession-slash-interview with Vicki Mabrey of ABC’s ‘Nightline’, parts of which were broadcast Monday morning on ‘Good Morning America’, James said he “took a pretty amazing life and amazing success and marriage and threw it away by my own hands.”
News of James’ infidelities broke last March only two weeks after Bullock won an Academy Award as Best Actress for her work in “The Blind Side” and thanked her husband for always having her back. He in turn was keeping a secret, many secrets in fact, which he describes as “horrible” and “terrible.”
James said he still loves Bullock and knows his cheating on America’s sweetheart has made him among “the most hated” men in the country if not the world.
“When I was doing it, you know, one, I knew it was horrible, it made me feel horrible. And two, I knew I would get caught eventually, and I think I wanted to get caught,” he said. “I know for a fact now what it was, you know. I mean, it was me trying to self-sabotage my life.”
The emotional interview also includes James explaining why he cheated and what he learned in rehab. He also spoke about the role he’ll play, if any, in the baby boy Bullock adopted. As celebrity confessionals go, this one seems, at least from the bits previewed, brutally honest and in keeping with the 41-year-old owner of West Coast Choppers’ personality – hard core.
“I’ve spent my whole life with the kids and with her trying to … protect her from everything, but the most hurt she’s ever been caused is by the person that wanted to protect her,” he said. “It’s terrible, and she’s going to be hurt for a long time.”
Vicki Mabrey’s exclusive interview with Jesse James airs Tuesday May 25, 2010 at 11:35pm ET/PT on a special-edition of “Nightline.”
