Will the last ghost Melinda encounters be that of her own series?
Friday’s season finale of CBS’ ‘Ghost Whisperer‘ might end up being the series’ last. Barring an eleventh hour deal with rival network ABC, it seems as though tonight’s ‘Ghost Whisperer’ could be the final installment before the Jennifer Love Hewitt-led supernatural drama goes into the afterlife itself.
The series, which stars Love Hewitt as spirit medium Melinda Gordon, was one of a batch of series cancellations that CBS announced earlier this week, as the axe fell on seven series, including ‘Ghost Whisperer,’ ‘Cold Case,’ ‘Miami Medical,’ ‘NUMB3RS,’ and comedies ‘The New Adventures of Old Christine,’ ‘Gary Unmarried,’ and ‘Accidentally on Purpose.’
But before the ghostly drama goes into the night–or is saved by ABC–there is one last episode, airing tonight at 8 p.m. ET/PT, that allows Melinda’s son Aiden (Connor Gibbs)–who has inherited his mother’s ability to communicate with the dead as well as his own empathic abilities–the opportunity to shine.
“He has to come to Melinda’s aid and really saves her life in the season finale,” Hewitt told ‘Entertainment Tonight.’ “The dark side gets extremely powerful very quickly and he’s sort of her only heroic key. So my son gets to kind of be a superhero for the episode, which is very cool.”
So is this the end of ‘Ghost Whisperer’ then? Reports of talks between studio ABC Studios (which co-produces the series with CBS Television Studios) and ABC are said to be ongoing. While there is no guarantee that ‘Ghost Whisperer’ will follow in ‘Scrubs’ footsteps and jump ship to another network, Deadline.com is reporting that writers on “Ghost Whisperer” have been told not to accept other job offers at this time… and said writers have deals with the studio already in place.
All of which means that ‘Ghost Whisperer’ may still have a ghost of a chance.
