‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Finale
What is being billed as the biggest ‘Grey’s Anatomy’s season finale ever airs tonight (ABC, 9/8c).
In case you have somehow missed the promos, there is an armed gunman in the hospital. Someone will die — even if its one of the Mercy transplants that nobody cares about. I hope it’s Owen (Kevin McKidd).
Of course, in last year’s season finale original cast member George O’Malley (T.R. Knight, who has since dropped off the face of the earth) died. But he was hit by a bus, not shot. This is totally different! As Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) intones in the promos, the hospital was always her sanctuary, even when there was the guy with the bomb in his chest that could have blown up the hospital, or that time when Dr. Burke (Isaiah Washington) got shot on the grounds of the hospital. He was technically outside the door. This is totally different!
If that isn’t enough to impress you, series creator and showrunner Shonda Rhimes wrote both hours. And Mandy Moore guest stars. That’s right. Last week it was Demi Lovato. This week its Mandy Moore, the Demi Lovato of the late 90s!
Still not sold? For months the show awkwardly hid Ellen Pompeo’s real life pregnancy. Now that her maternity leave is over, Meredith is preggers. Or so this clip leads us to believe. Although Lexie (Chyler Leigh) has been complaining that she’s gaining weight… It’s insane!
I kid. The first half of this season of ‘Grey’s was a mess. The merger storyline crowded the show with unneeded new characters. As annoying as Izzie (Katherine Heigl) had become, having her marriage to Alex (Justin Chambers) end over a misunderstanding straight out of ‘Three’s Company‘ was not a satisfying conclusion to her storyline. The revelation that the Chief (James Pickens Jr.) had fallen off the wagon was dragged out so long that he just seemed like an incompetent jerk.
The Christina (Sandra Oh)/Owen/Teddy (Kim Raver) triangle is a mess. It is hard to believe that two brilliant, attractive women would be vying for the affections of this emotionally abusive jerk with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. I used to love the character of Owen, but he has become a selfish ass who uses his war trauma as an excuse for everything.
But, since Derek (Patrick Dempsey) became the Chief of Surgery, the show has been invigorated. It creates conflict for Meredith and Derek that is not based on Meredith’s dysfunctional personality. Meredith’s relationship with the rest of the residents is altered because she’s now post-it married to the boss. It gives Derek something to do other than look pretty. The show seems to have gotten its sense of humor back. So perhaps this finale will actually live up to its billing. Or the shooter could kill off every character but Lexie and Owen. Either way, I bet someone will repeat the same phrase multiple times during a lengthy soliloquy.
