Hugo Weaving is the Red Skull in ‘Captain America’

He’s been Agent Smith in The Matrix, Elrond in The Lord of the Rings, V in V For Vendetta, the voice of Megatron in Transformers and an impending lycanthrope in The Wolfman, and now Hugo Weaving is set to add a crown jewel to his nerd-king status.

He’s just been cast as The Red Skull, aka Johann Schmidt, aka the nefarious Nazi nemesis of Chris Evans’ Captain America and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes in the upcoming Marvel Comics film Captain America: The First Avenger. The Skull is one of the premier supervillains in the Marvel universe, and Weaving plays extremely memorable bad guys, so this should shore up some of the uncertainty about Joe Johnston’s film. The bonus is that he’s proven with V for Vendetta that he’s got no problem spending a whole movie behind a mask, as he’ll have to do most if not all of this film sporting that sinister red visage. Well done, Marvel.

Watch the last attempt at a Captain America film on Fancast right now, featuring the Red Skull as, for some reason, an Italian fascist.
