Is it fair to compare ‘Top Chef’ judge Tom Colicchio to Sandra Bullock?
Probably not, but let’s do it anyway. The celebrated New York chef has his share of mega hits, Craft, Craftsteak and Colicchio & Sons. And now he has an award from the James Beard Foundation as the top chef of 2010.
Colicchio has been a finalist seven times since 2002, the year he opened Craft. Colicchio jumped to the forefront of the culinary world in 1994 when he partnered with another New York restaurant icon, Danny Meyer, and opened Gramercy Tavern.
Over the weekend, Colicchio attended the White House Correspondents dinner, where he tweeted on his Twitter page, “Ok so as far as i can tell the waiters have the most difficult job here tonight.”
That’s a typical Colicchio observation. In an interview last year with the NY Times, he spoke about his guitar collection, fondness for catching yellowfin tuna from his boat, and an aversion to okra. Asked about his cooking philosphy, he said, “Buy the best you can find or afford and don’t overmanipulate it. If I cook a scallop, the best praise you can give me is that it tastes like a scallop.”
