Late-night host David Letterman got a standing ovation Friday when he made a rare guest appearance on ‘Live with Regis & Kelly.’

It was the gap-toothed comedian’s first visit to the ABC studio since his pal Regis Philbin returned to the show after heart surgery in 2007.

Decked out in a black pin striped suit and a purple, yellow and white tie, Letterman openly addressed his adulterous behavior, the bizarre extortion case that followed, and how he’s putting his life back together in the wake of the much publicized scandal.

“It was reckless behavior on my part. And if you behave recklessly, and it hurts your family, of course it hurts you,” Letterman said. “It wasn’t a tragedy, it was just stupidity.”

“You’re scared, you’re depressed and sad, and you gotta let that knock you down, and then pretty soon, you gotta start knocking it down,” admits Dave. “And when that happens, you’re able to take a look at the pieces left of your life, and you’re looking at the shards, and you think maybe we can put this together and maybe it won’t be the same, maybe it can even be better.”

The host of ‘The Late Show With David Letterman‘ also weighed in on ‘The Tonight Show’ fiasco when Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien had their “playground hissy fit fight,” over the coveted ‘Tonight Show’ gig.

“I found it wildly entertaining,” Letterman chuckled. “Conan is off counting his money and Jay is back where he belongs. And Conan got another show – where is it – TBS?”
