As a teen who spent countless hours glued to the television devouring the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, it was with great pleasure that I discovered gold medalist Kerri Strug’s name pop up in this weekend’s New York Times wedding announcements.

Strug, who famously clinched the gymnastics gold for Team USA after landing a difficult vault on an injured ankle, was an American hero, after all!

When she made an appearance on ‘Saturday Night Live‘ following the win, the clip instantly became a quotable hit among friends – and it bears resurfacing in light of her latest news.

In the video below, Strug is joined on the Norm MacDonald-hosted Weekend Updated by “brother” Kippy (Chris Kattan). Kattan, decked out in a blonde cropped wig, and matching “Magnificent 7″ jogging suit, imitates Strug’s notoriously helium-infused high-pitched voice with uncanny precision, professing to have “Said a little prayer” for his sister during The Games.  At the end of the piece Bela Karolyi (Mark McKinney) arrives to scoop pint-sized Kerri up, but not before shouting at Kippy to “Shake It Off!” when his foot falls asleep at the desk.

The 32-year-old Strug, who is a Stanford graduate with a master’s degree in sociology (who knew?), met her husband William Fischer III through mutual friends, The Times notes. She currently works as a project manager for the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention in Washington. You can read the full announcement -complete with a longer-haired Strug! – here.
