Calling to mind Wener Herzog’s 2005 documentary ‘Grizzly Man,’ Animal Planet has announced a short-series order of ‘The Bear Whisperer,’ which will track wildlife specialist Steve Searles as he finds humane ways of controlling the bear population in Mammoth Lakes, Calif., reports The Hollywood Reporter.

Searles, whom Time Magazine has described as an “intense, ponytailed Ichabod Crane figure,” employs a number of curious bear-wrangling methods, including using a “combination of firecrackers, flares, rubber bullets, air horns, and shouts,” according to Planet Green.

With a ‘Dog Whisperer,’ a cat whisperer (‘Housecat Housecall’), a ‘Skunk Whisperer’  – Discovery announced production plans for this at their recent upfront presentation – and (likely the catalyst for all aforementioned Whisperers) the 1998 Robert Redford film ‘The Horse Whisperer,’ the real question is: does the world truly need a ‘Bear Whisperer?’  Viewers will have to provide that answer, as the cabler will likely base a full-series order on the show’s ratings performance.
