This week on The CW’s ‘90210‘ (Tuesdays at 8/7c), Adriana outs her and Gia’s romance in a very public way. But is Adriana simply taking a walk on the Sapphic side? Or are her feelings the real deal? Jessica Lowndes shared a peek at what’s ahead for this storyline, and why she is proud to be a part of it.

What were you more nervous about: tackling the Gia storyline and doing it justice, or singing on the show?
[Laughs] The first one, because I didn’t have any personal experience with it, and singing I have been doing since I was 3. That [Glorious Steinems storyline] mirrors my life because I’m actually recording an album right now. But it’s fun, I think the [Adriana/Gia] scenes turned out really good. We share a very special bond on the show, and people will see that.

What was your No. 1 concern going into it?
My character has battled a drug addiction and pregnancy and now this… My No. 1 concern was making it as truthful and real as possible, because these are pressing issues on society. The response from the fans has been the biggest motivation for me. I’ve had people come up to me and say they’ve been following the show as a way to get through their own situation. Any way that I can help others not feel so alone is awesome.

One nice touch is that they have made Gia (played by Rumer Willis) just as tentative about the relationship as Adriana, and not at all opportunistic.
Exactly, and I think that’s great. These are stories that are going on in high school, and I feel very blessed to be given the responsibility to tell these stories. You see two different sides here. There’s Adriana, who is questioning her sexuality, and Gia, who was born [gay] but is still very nervous to express that, because she doesn’t want to make Adriana uncomfortable.

Typically, this storyline would proceed either of two ways: Gia’s friends vehemently disapprove of Adriana because she’s just “experimenting,” or Adriana “slips” and hooks up with Navid. Are we heading down either of those paths?
Well, Adriana has a very addictive personality where she’s addicted to the highs and the lows. When anything is going smoothly, she gets bored. Gia’s been great for her, by encouraging her to pursue her music and get her mind off Navid (Michael Steger), but I feel like Navid will always have a special place in her heart. But Adriana definitely does have feelings for Gia, so you’ll just have to wait and see what happens!

You know who I feel bad for this season? Poor Shenae Grimes. Annie’s been off in her own isolated storyline. Will there be more overlap anytime soon?
Definitely. We’ve all taken our turn being the outsider – Adriana had her turn last year [Laughs] – and if Annie ever gets rid of [drug-dealing "boyfriend"] Jasper, that will help her chances of hanging out with the rest of us.

You mentioned your own music. Is it anything like what we hear on ’90210′?
The Glorious Steinems is jazzier, while the stuff I do in real life is more pop rock-y.

Who are your biggest musical influences?
My biggest influence would be my mom. She’s a piano teacher, so for my whole childhood I listened to music while doing homework. I fell in love with music at a young age. I like Katy Perry, Kelly C, Pink, and Rihanna… They all have very cool voices.

What can you tease about this year’s season finale?
There is going to be a lot more music for my character, which has been fun. I’ve been able to write music for the show, and that is the coolest thing ever. But Navid is still in the picture, and something really big happens to the dynamic between him and Adriana. A lot of crazy stuff happens for everybody!
