On the first night of elimination on ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ most thought Kate Gosselin would be the one sent packing, but the reality TV mom wasn’t even in the Bottom Two, despite a rough performance Monday night.

It was Shannen Doherty, the former ‘Beverly Hills, 90210‘ star, who was sent home instead in an elimination upset–and there wasn’t a non-shocked person in the audience. Another surprise: ‘Baywatch’ star Pamela Anderson was the other celeb in the Bottom Two.

“We were shocked,” admits her dancing partner Mark Ballas. “She has a great fan base. She danced really well. We did an improvement from last week. We’re a great team, a great couple. We get along really well. We had fun.”

So why does he think she went home? “I don’t know,” Ballas says. “Maybe it’s a freak thing. This stuff happens. It happened to me on Season 5 with Sabrina [Bryan]. Iā€™m not too much of an emotional person, but I’m really bummed out. I had a great idea for next week, for story week.”

Ballas wouldn’t have been able to dance next week anyway as it turns out.

Hanging on to crutches, he told reporters about his fresh knee injury: “It happened in dress rehearsal yesterday and it was bothering me a little bit so I went to the hospital and had them look at it,” he says. “They gave me the all right to perform and gave me some stuff to help me get through it. But then on the show, I was fine. I felt okay. But then when it wore off, I was like ugh. So I woke up this morning and it was a little more painful. I went to see my doctor, who did my shoulder surgery after my dislocation on season five, and luckily no ACL or MCL on internal damage we were worried about it. It’s just my muscle on my right knee came off the bone a little bit.

Ballas says that since it’s not a major injury, he likely won’t need surgery. “It does hurt, though,” he adds. “They said six weeks of recovery at the max. I’m hoping I can do it in three. I usually bounce back very quickly.”

Had Doherty not been eliminated Tuesday night, Ballas was going to have his father fly out to be the fill-in dancer for him during rehearsals, while he choreographed from the sidelines.

This won’t be the last we’ll see of Ballas, though. “Hopefully you’ll see me on some results shows. I’ll be on the results show next week doing something,” he says.
