When ‘Dancing with the Stars‘ host Tom Bergeron Tweeted early Tuesday, “Just found out tonight’s bottom two on ‘DWTS!’ WTF???”, we thought, ‘Oh, Tom, you’re exaggerating just to get us to tune-in.’ But, nope, the first elimination of the season was truly a “WTF?” moment for all involved, from the stars to the studio audience to the backstage press.

Shannen Doherty and former ‘Dancing’ champ Mark Ballas were voted off the show in a major upset. Astronaut Buzz Aldrin and drama mama Kate Gosselin were at the bottom of the leaderboard but both were ‘safe.’

“Dancing isn’t really my thing,” Doherty said after hearing her name called. “I did it for my dad,” she said, who proudly beamed from the audience.

The night kicked off with surprises as astronaut Buzz Aldrin and Ashly Costa, who scored the lowest numbers with a mere 12, were the first pair to be spared (yes, spared!). That was followed by a shocking first pair to be in the Bottom Two: Pamela Anderson and Damian Whitewood. Gasps were heard in the air from the dance floor to backstage, especially since Anderson and Whitewood scored fourth best overall, with combined score of 43.

The top scorers of the week with a total of 53, Nicole Scherzinger and Derek Hough’s encore Jive performance proved just why they scored the first two 10′s of the season. I’m putting my money on this pair to take it (almost) all the way!

Week 2 Tension Brings Out the Snippy

The tension mounted, though, as four couples waited onstage to learn their fate. Cheryl Burke looked ill before relief washed over her face upon finding out that she and Chad Ochocinco would be back. Maksim Chmerkovskiy picked up Erin Andrews with joy when they were given the good news, leaving Shannen Doherty and Kate Gosselin shaking in their dancing shoes to find out who would join Anderson in the Bottom Two.

When Gosselin was announced safe, Kate screamed and jumped up and down, as screams erupted backstage … in disapproval.

Season 6 alum Adam Carolla’s review of this week’s performances was a nice bit of comic relief on what is normally a nail-biting night, as he made fun of Aldin’s moon-shirts, Anderson and Whitewood’s blondness, and Edyta Sliwinska’s two elbow hits to Aiden Turner’s head. The elbows didn’t cause the dancing duo to loose footing in the show, though, as the couple were declared safe early on, as were Niecy Nash and Louis Van Amstel.

Those going on to dance another day, have quite a challenge in front of them: Head judge Len Goodman gave the dancers a tall order for next week’s performance show: Tell a story with dance. (But no messin’ about!)
