Our long national nightmare….

Er, let me start this differently. The upcoming season of MTV’s ‘The Hills‘ will be its last, says series creator Adam DiVello.

“I think we’ve told the story of struggle and of finding yourself in L.A.,” DiVello tells Entertainment Weekly.

The final slew of 12 episodes premieres April 27.

What’s on tap for the show’s swan song? Viewers will lay witness to Audrina Patridge‘s courtship with singer Ryan Cabrera, how Kristin Cavallari contends with rumors of drug abuse, Stephanie Pratt‘s stab at sobriety following her 2009 DUI arrest, and, yes, Heidi Montag‘s flurry of physical augmentations.

“Our cameras are there that minute [Heidi's] mother opens the door and sees her daughter for the first time” after a series of plastic surgery procedures, says DiVello.

Executive producer Liz Gateley tells EW, “It’s a really touching but heartbreaking scene to watch.”

Heidi’s arguably better half also will get some screen time during the final season… eventually.

Spencer [Pratt] is dealing with some stuff right now, and once he gets through that, we’ll be back to shooting with [him] again,” says DiVello. “Bottom line is … He’ll be in most of the episodes.”
