‘Cougar Town‘ creator and executive producer Bill Lawrence has plans for the real-life best friend of series star Courteney Cox.
“Jennifer Aniston is going to be on the show next year,” he announced to the crowd at PaleyFest in Los Angeles on Friday where the show’s cast gathered for the screening of a new episode and a lively panel discussion.
“She doesn’t know it yet,” he quickly added. “Courteney promised it as a birthday present.”
The star of the upcoming big-screen comedy ‘The Bounty Hunter‘ opposite Gerard Butler, it’s easy to see Aniston fitting in well with the wacky group of characters her former ‘Friends’ co-star is now spending time with on ‘Cougar Town.’
Aniston has done very little television since ‘Friends’ left the air but one of her appearances was a role on Cox’s previous series ‘Dirt.’
“She’s so busy, I’m sure at some point she would do it maybe,” Cox told Fancast before the start of the panel. “It would be something fantastic, something she would just have a blast at.”
Until that happens, Cox’s newly-single character of Jules Cobb has plenty to deal with now that she’s back on the market after 20 years of marriage. She has hooked up with ex-husband Bobby (Brian Van Holt) and engaged in a growing flirtation with her friend and neighbor Grayson (Josh Hopkins).
“I think that’s who people are rooting for,” Cox said. “I like the thought of the love triangle and ‘Who should I be with?’ and maybe having Bobby becoming more of a viable person now that I might have Grayson. Who knows? It’s still up in the air what’s going to happen. But I think ultimately it’s probably going to be with someone with whom she’ll have that push-pull relationship.”
Kevin Biegel, the show’s other creator and executive producer, told Fancast after the panel that Jules and Grayson may get together sooner than later but that doesn’t mean it would be happily ever after.
“We’re of the inclination that we should just drop the hammer but we’re not sure what the repercussions of that will be,” he said. “All I can tell you is something will happen between Grayson and Jules before the end of the season. Anything is possible.”
Speaking of Aniston, she won an Emmy once for her portrayal of Rachel on ‘Friends‘ while Cox was the only member of that show’s ensemble to be never even been nominated. She admitted during the panel that it would be awfully nice to get a nod for her current show.
“I’d love to get nominated for an Emmy,” she said. “I’ve been doing this for a long time and it would feel reeeeeeally good.”
