The ‘Rockford’ re-do is on.

After NBC announced last summer its plans to remake the ’70s P.I. series ‘The Rockford Files,’ there was the collective wail of ‘Don’t mess a classic.’

Now we know they are serious about it, because EW is reporting who’s just been cast as the lead: Dermot Mulroney.

Der-Mutt-Mul … Really? Yep, he’s the new Jim Rockford.

Mulroney, 46, is best known for … being confused with Dylan McDermott, being the ex-husband of indie fave Catherine Keener, and being Julia Roberts’ ex-lover in ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding.’

Sure, he’s sufficiently handsome and more-than-moderately charming, but does Mulroney have what it takes to follow in the footsteps of TV’s iconic gum shoe, James Garner? Talk about tackling a tough case.

This will be the actor’s first venture into series television. At least the project comes from the capable hands of David Shore, the man who brought you ‘House.’ Steve Carell of ‘The Office‘ is also attached as co-executive producer.

“What makes ‘Rockford’ timeless is that he’s vulnerable, he’s flawed. He’s used to hustling and getting hustled,” Shore told Variety at the time of the remake’s announcement. “I had no interest in adapting any old stuff, but this was the one exception,” he added.
