Ah, the “Love Boat” syndrome. That was a TV series that helped to keep aging TV and Movie stars in the limelight, even if only for a week or two. But where can the stars of yesteryear turn to these days?

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit?

That’s right. The L & O franchise is the biggest player in “stunt casting” coups. And today, according to TV Guide, they’ve hit a Grand Slam by casting ageless Sex Goddess Ann-Margaret on the March 31st episode.

She’s most famous for being one of Elvis Presley‘s first serious girlfriends. But she carved her own niche in ’50s and ’60s films as a singer and dancer with All American Girl looks tinged by a sexy edge.

And, as an added bonus, it’ll be a reunion of sorts for fans of ’70s movies and TV as it was announced that ex-”Charlie’s Angels” star Jaclyn Smith is also on tap.

Had enough nostalgia? Not yet. The episode will also feature former TV Dream Girls Morgan Fairchild and Susan Anton. What’s next? A return to the “Free Love” era?

Not quite. The ripped-from-the-headlines, sex-crime focused SVU is about as far away from the uncomplicated and slightly corny Love Boat as can be. The logline for the episode explains that Ann-Margret will be playing “a star of commercials that were made in the ’70s” with Jaclyn Smith as “a retired cop who works with Benson and Stabler to solve an old crime.” As SVU Exec producer Neal Baer puts it, it will be like “Charlie’s Angels thirty years later.”

Hey, we’ll take what we can get. It’s refreshing that some TV moguls are carrying the torch for the late Aaron Spelling and making sure some old friends have a shot at staying in front of the cameras now and then.

Who knows? Maybe even “Love Boat” will make a comeback? Not likely. That ship has sailed.
