Kathy Griffin is ready to show off her serious acting chops. The self-proclaimed ‘D-Lister‘ is taking a stab at drama with a guest-starring role on ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit‘–a part that includes a lip-lock with lead Detective Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay).
Griffin recently talked about the gig while promoting the episode on ‘The Wendy Williams Show.’ “I was never so scared in my life having that gig cause I haven’t had an acting job in a long time and that’s a serious show.” She went on to joke, “I had diarrhea for two weeks solid … I lost 10 pounds on that show.”
The comedienne’s appearance was the brainchild of the show’s executive producer Neal Baer, who enjoyed her work hosting The Creative Emmys – or as Griffin’s fans know she calls the “Schmemmys” – and decided to write Griffin a meaty, Emmy-worthy role.
Appropriately, the episode features the gay icon playing a gay activist named Babs Duffy, who works with Benson and Stabler after a prominent lesbian is killed in the community.
Griffin tells the New York Daily News she was happy not to play a funny woman: “Playing myself gets kind of boring. There’s enough of myself already out there. I’m sick of myself.”
Those looking for juicy scoop from Griffin about kissing Hargitay will have to look elsewhere, since the funny gal was so nervous, she hardly remembers anything about the smooch.
“When it came to the actual kiss, I kind of don’t remember it. I’d love to sit here and say her lips are soft, but you’d have to ask Babs,” Griffin jokes.
‘SVU’ has a long track record of writing episodes that earn guest-starring actresses Emmys. The show has won the category for the past three years, with last year’s golden statue going to Ellen Burstyn for playing Elliot Stabler’s (Christopher Meloni) bipolar mother.
The show, which is in its 11th season, also has a star-studded roster of guest stars coming up, including ‘The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency’ star Jill Scott, ‘The O.C.’s Mischa Barton, Lena Olin (‘Alias’) and Jeri Ryan (‘Boston Legal’).
The Kathy Griffin episode of ‘SVU’ airs Wednesday, March 3, at 9 p.m. on NBC.
