A big loss for ‘Brothers & Sisters‘ may turn out to nonetheless be ABC’s gain, if the network’s entertainment president has his way. (And if you’d rather not know who’s leaving, stop reading now.)

ABC entertainment chief Steven McPherson confirmed on Thursday that the family drama would bid adieu to that ageless politico, Robert McAllister, at season’s end – though Rob Lowe might wind up finding another home at the network.

“We would like to keep Rob at ABC; we feel he should be anchoring his own franchise,” McPherson told Deadline.com. “We are in talks now.”

When ‘Brothers & Sisters’ debuted in 2006, Calista Flockhart’s Kitty was initially set up for a love triangle with fiancé Matthew Settle (now of ‘Gossip Girl‘) and coworker Josh Hopkins (‘Cougar Town‘). When the drama struggled to find an audience, former Brat Packer Lowe was brought in to draw eyeballs – and he did. Originally a recurring player, he was promptly promoted to series regular in Season 2.

Lowe, though, is said to have grown restless – and felt underutilized – as ‘Brothers & Sisters’ endured a series of show runner swaps. Ergo McPherson’s desire to place Lowe at the fore of his own show.

One possible landing place for Lowe: ABC’s ‘Off the Map,’ a medical drama pilot being exec-produced by Shonda Rhimes. After all, Rhimes originally sought out Lowe to play Derek on ‘Grey’s Anatomy‘ – yet he famously passed.
