It usually isn’t customary for a reporter to become the subject of the news, but when chaos and disaster strike, it’s hard to avoid attention, as CNN’s Chief Medical Correspondent Sanjay Gupta recently found out in Haiti.

Gupta found himself as the lone doctor in a Haitian field hospital Friday night after a team of Belgian doctors fled for security concerns, according to CNN.com.

Reports of Gupta going solo in Haiti caused some confusion at the United Nations, as the organization reported it did not order the evacuation of medical teams — apparently the decision came from a local official who was serving at the hospital.

Either way, Gupta stayed on despite the evacuation and found himself, along with CNN staffers, security and a Belgian nurse, helping earthquake victims as they came in throughout the night.

“I’ve never been in a situation like this,” Gupta said. “This is quite ridiculous.”
