Rocketry expert Erik Gates, a regular contributor on the Discovery Channel series ‘Mythbusters,’ has died at the age of 47.

CNN reports that Gates died on December 20 from blunt force chest injury sustained after falling 30 feet through the skylight of a building in Newbury Park, California.

Gates’ company Gateco Electric was employed at the building site, and Gates was reportedly doing electrical work on the roof.

According to other outlets, the coroner’s report of the body deemed his fall an accident. However, it is unclear how exactly Gates fell because his co-worker had his back turned at the time of his fall.

Gates appeared on four episodes of ‘Mythbusters,’ and the show dedicated their Monday episode to him.

The ‘Mythbusters’ team also shared their condolences on their Twitter page, tweeting “Team MB wishes to express our deepest sympathies on the passing of our beloved rocket expert, Erik,” adding “You were an honorary MythBuster and will be sorely missed.”
