Going into the Season 5 finale, fans of ‘Dexter‘ knew that it was going to be a “game changer,” but nobody could have foreseen the blood bath that ensued.
Not one but two major players were killed off on Sunday night’s gloriously gruesome episode, Trinity (John Lithgow) and Dexter’s wife, Rita (Julie Benz).
Trinity seemed like a long time coming and Lithgow admits that he thinks it was the perfect ending.
“Trinity not only got what he deserved, he got what he wanted,” Lithgow said to E!. “The thing that fascinated me about this character is that he’s a serial killer who absolutely hates what he’s doing and wishes that somebody would stop it… The strange, almost melancholy tone of that last scene [where Dexter kills Trinity] is ‘Thank God it’s over, do it now, put an end to this.’ That was fascinating to me.”
But Rita? That was the real shocker of the night.
Executive Producer Clyde Phillips explained the horrifying twist to EW, “The story evolved and it kind of became inevitable. We knew that we had to do more than kill Trinity… We knew that we were going to take Trinity out in the 12th episode and we think that the audience knew that, too. We had to raise the bar to as high as possible and then figure out what to do next year.”
Unfortunately devout fans can’t even get a glimpse of what will happen next year, since the writers haven’t even begun conceptualizing ideas for the murder-mystery-cult-hit.
“Everybody’s on hiatus,” Phillips told E!. “We haven’t begun thinking about last year. Generally what happens is everybody gets back together in February and we start talking about all the ridiculous ideas we might have had during the off season and out of those what if’s grows the story.”
