Here’s what’s opening in selected cities across the country, and as David Letterman always says, we just pray to God that your city has been selected. We’ve got some serious Oscar pedigrees floating around in this batch of films. There’s Academy Award winner Pedro Almodóvar’sreunion with Academy Award nominee Penélope Cruz in Broken Embraces, or Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage’s dramatic turn in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, or maybe you’d prefer the slow-burn noir of The Missing Person, starring Academy Award nominees Michael Shannon and Amy Ryan. Then, there’s John Woo’s vast historical epic Red Cliff, his own entry into this year’s Oscar field.

Renowned director Pedro Almodóvar reteams with his Volver star Penélope Cruz to tell the noirish story of a blind screenwriter named Mateo Blanco (Lluís Homar) who becomes evermore involved with the lovely secretary Lena (Cruz), much to the chagrin of their boss, producer Ernesto Martel (José Luis Gómez). So jealous is he that he commissions a documentary to be made about the making of their film as an excuse to spy on them.

Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon stars in this Sundance modern-day film noir as a private dick down on his luck hired to follow a mysterious yet schlubby man trying to disappear from his life across the country without what kind of shady business he’s getting himself into. Fellow Oscar nominee Amy Ryan also stars.

Abel Ferrara made quite an impression with his 1992 original Bad Lieutenant starring Harvey Keitel, and now the inimitable Werner Herzog is taking his own shot at reimagining the material, transplanting it from New York to New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It remains the story of a drug-addled cop on the edge (Nicolas Cage) who doesn’t give a damn about following the law, abusing his authority with abandon while getting deeply involved with a prostitute (Eva Mendes).

Director John Woo reteams with his Hard Boiled star Tony Leung to create a massive historical epic set in 208 A.D., telling the tale of the fall of the Han Dynasty. A power-hungry general (Zhang Fengyi) sets his sights on silencing independent realms who may threaten his pursuit of control, but the benevolent warlords Liu Bei (Yao Yung) and Sun Quan (Chang Chen) are determined to resist, with the help of their brilliant strategists Zhuge Liang (Takeshi Kaneshiro) and Zhou You (Leung).
