Hello Everyone!

Last night’s Episode #7 took our teams to yet another historic location in Amazing Race history: Stockholm, Sweden —- where a nightmarishly daunting final task awaited. Long time fans will remember this incident well! Let’s get started with Today’s Blog!

**************************************************
EPISODE 7 —– STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN
**************************************************

The show began with teams departing from the Pitstop in Amsterdam, the Netherlands enroute to Stockholm, Sweden. Brothers Sam & Dan, being the first team to arrive at the Pitstop in the
previous episode, were the first to depart, followed very closely by dating couple Meghan & Cheyne.

The two teams made it to the Schiphol Airport almost simultaneously. However, the ticket counter would not be opening for several hours, giving the 3 remaining teams a chance to catch up.

Once the tickets were purchased, teams ended up on two flights:

*Flight #1 – Departing 6:55am – Sam & Dan, Meghan & Cheyne, Flight Time & Big Easy

*Flight #2 – Departing 9:25am – Brian & Ericka, Gary & Matt

This flight scenario meant that Brian & Ericka and Gary & Matt would be over 2 hours behind the other teams upon arrival in Stockholm……not the best way to start out a Leg of the Race.

Upon arrival in Stockholm, the first clue of the day instructed teams to travel by train and ferry to the Tivoli Grona Lund Amusement Part. Sam & Dan and Meghan & Cheyne got an early lead over Flight Time & Big Easy by scoring a train faster than the Globetrotters.

*************************
TIME TO FREE FALL
*************************

Sam & Dan and Meghan & Cheyne soon arrived at the amusement together, where the next clue stated that one team member would need to ride the Fritt Fall. While on this ride, the team member would need to visually scan the park for an ARROW which would point in the direction of their next clue. The Fritt Fall ride was a 24 story FREE FALL!

****************************************
A NEW ALLIANCE IS FORMING?
****************************************

Sam and Cheyne decided to tackle the task and very SMARTLY decided to work together to find the arrow with Sam scanning the left side of the park and Cheyne scanning the right side.

With the Poker girls out of the game, we wondered if Sam & Dan were attempting to build a NEW alliance with Meghan & Cheyne?

The cooperation paid off as they QUICKLY saw the arrow before taking the dreaded free fall. Once back on ground, the two teams worked together to follow the arrow direction and found the next clue.

*********************************
TIME TO ADOPT A GNOME
*********************************

It’s not a season of Amazing Race without that one Leg wherein teams have to adopt a Travelocity Gnome :0)

At the next clue, Sam & Dan and Meghan & Cheyne had to play a game of Travelocity Gnome Ring Toss! In this challenge, teams had to toss a ring onto a large red hat, then check to see if a gnome was underneath the hat for them to adopt!

Within their first few tries, both teams succeeded at the Ring Toss, adopted a Gnome, and discovered a DETOUR.

***************************************************************
DETOUR – NOBEL DYNAMITE or VIKING ALPHABET
***************************************************************

The Detour choice was NOBEL DYNAMITE or VIKING ALPHABET. In Nobel Dynamite, teams had to fill sandbags and pile them up to create a little bunker, then set off DYNAMITE to uncover a box containing the next clue. In Viking Alphabet, teams would have to decode a confusing Viking message using the viking alphabet. For us, this would be a no-brainer…..who would pass up a chance to detonate DYNAMITE on the Amazing Race!

Meanwhile, Gary & Matt and Brian & Ericka finally arrived in Stockholm, significantly behind the other 3 teams. As they raced out of the airport, Brian & Ericka scored a train faster than Gary & Matt, setting the father & son into a firm last place.

******************************************
RACING FOR FAMILY RELATIONS
******************************************

During this episode, Brian & Ericka took a moment to reflect on why they were racing. Besides the million dollars, Brian mentioned that he looked forward to strengthening the bond with his wife, and also hoping to build bridges with Ericka’s family. Brian added that he has always felt some distance with Ericka’s mother, who had seemed disappointed that her daughter had married a “white man.”

Without question, this was the most touching moment of the episode. No matter what “color” his skin is, Brian has proven to be one of the most loving and supportive spouses we have ever seen on the Amazing Race. Sure, the two have had little “moments” of bickering, but the way he supported her through the Bell challenge last week was just incredible to watch.

It’s sad that even here heading into 2010, there are still such pervasive, antiquated thoughts on race, family, and love. We do hope that the Race experience is helping Brian & Ericka mend the situation with their parent or parents.

****************************************************************************************
SAM & DAN VERSUS BIG EASY & FLIGHT TIME —- BATTLE IS BREWING
****************************************************************************************

Meghan & Cheyne, Sam & Dan, and amazingly Flight Time & Big Easy all arrived at the DYNAMITE DETOUR within minutes of one another. It was here that Sam & Dan took a potshot at the Globetrotters, as Dan yelled out, “Did your fans help you guys get here?” Big Easy shot back, “Our feelings our hurt, now we’re going to blow you all up!”

The three teams began to fill up their sand bags and building their bunkers. Sam & Dan discovered it was much easier to accomplish this using their hands as opposed to the small shovels.

Sam & Dan then connected up the detonation device and EXPLODED the dynamite! When the smoke cleared, they found the next clue, instructing them to drive to the Bogs Gard Farm, an infamous local in Amazing Race lore………..

Meghan & Cheyne began to bicker at the sandbags and soon fell into third place behind the Globetrotters.

************************************************************
ROADBLOCK SWITCHBACK – SEARCH THE HAY
************************************************************

Sam & Dan soon arrived at the Bog Gard Farm in first place, where they were confronted with the Race’s FIRST ROADBLOCK SWITCHBACK…….that is, a Roadblock from a PREVIOUS season of the Amazing Race! In this challenge, teams would need to unroll HUGE hay bales to search for a yellow-and-red flag. Out of 186 hay bales, only 7 contained Race Flags! Back in Season 6 of the Race, this same task took Lena & Christy OVER 10 hours to complete!

Let’s take you back in time here for a little Race history lesson…..

.
Back to the episode, Sam volunteered to tack the challenge and soon began arguing back and forth with Dan. It got heated —- with Sam even begging his brother to just SHUT UP! Soonafter, Meghan began the task and announced, “This is the worst thing I’ve even done in my whole life.”

Big Easy soon jumped into the fray, mentioning that he wanted to find a flag to give his partner for a BIRTHDAY PRESENT. That’s right, today was Flight Time’s birthday!

Even in this difficult task, Big Easy kept things light saying “We didn’t have hay in the projects.”

***********************************************************
BRIAN & ERICKA AND GARY & MATT CATCH UP
***********************************************************

Unbelievably, Brian & Ericka and Gary & Matt closed the gap with the other 3 teams, arriving at the dreaded Roadblock.

Big Easy finally STRUCK GOLD, finding a flag in his hay bale! He excited rushed back to his partner, they received the next clue instructing them to run up the sidewalk and check into the PITSTOP!

**********************************************************************************************
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SURPRISE – FIRST PLACE FINISH FOR GLOBETROTTERS
**********************************************************************************************

Flight Time & Big Easy excitedly stepped onto the mat to score their second FIRST PLACE win! For their victory, Phil rewarded the duo with a trip for two to Turks and Caicos, courtesy of Travelocity. Our birthday boy was Flight Time was elated that his wish for this day indeed came true!

This was a moment of reassertion for the Globetrotters, as they had not enjoyed a first place win since Episode #2. Their competitive spirit was certainly not appreciated by Sam & Dan, who have gone out of their way to express their disdain for the basketball players.

*******************************************
MEGHAN CONTINUES TO SEARCH
*******************************************

Meghan could not believe her eyes when Brian & Ericka and Gary & Matt arrived on the scene. She began to sob that she had wasted two hours searching the hay to no avail. The bickering between the brothers continued to intensify as well.

To her delight, Meghan soon found a flag and decided to play a prank on her partner. She ran toward him screaming, “I just can’t do it anymore.” But when she got to Cheyne, she whipped out the flag —– shocking a now elated Cheyne! They then checked into the Pitstop in second place. Brian & Ericka soonafter checked in.

********************************************
EMOTIONAL MOMENT AT THE MAT
********************************************

Two teams remained at the hay bales: Sam & Dan and Gary & Matt. Sam finally found a flag and the duo left behind the father and son. At the mat, Dan actually wept over the way he had treated his brother this day, shouting at him and berating him at the hay challenge. The brothers vowed to treat one another with more respect and love as the Race continues.

fter hours in the field a very determined Gary finally found a flag, and he and Matt walked to Phil in last place. The pair smiled when they learned that this was a non-elimination leg and they were still in the race. Even knowing they had to face a Speed Bump in the next leg, the father and son kept their spirits high. Matt said, “My dad is Superman. This guy never gives up.” Gary added, “We’re not going to give up. We’re going to take it to the limit.”

*******************************************************
GARY & MATT SAVED BY NON-ELIMINATION
*******************************************************

After hours working, Gary & Matt finally finished the hay bale challenged and checked into the Mat in a decisive last place……only to be saved as Phil informed them that this was a “Non-Elimination Leg.” Because of this, Gary & Matt would have to face a SPEEDBUMP, a time-consuming task that only they would have to complete, in the next Leg of the Race. A hopeful Matt called his dad “Superman” and Gary said there was NO WAY they were giving up.

*******************************
FINAL ORDER OF FINISH
*******************************

1. Flight Time & Big Easy
2. Meghan & Cheyne
3. Brian & Ericka
4. Sam & Dan
5. Gary & Matt [NON-ELIMINATION]

*******************************
OTHER TIDBITS TO NOTE
*******************************

*This season of the Amazing Race has definitely been a season of “deja-vu.” We have visited more than one area that has previously been explored on the series. Long time fans of the series appreciated the SWITCHBACK to the hay bale challenge, while newer viewers were given a little glimpse into the vast history of the franchise. Keep in mind, this is season 15 of the show!

*Now that the Sam & Dan plus Poker Girls alliance has ended, we wondered all week long if the brothers would attempt to forge a new alliance in this episode. We saw the brothers “break bread” with Meghan & Cheyne at the Free Fall ride…….we also saw the brothers draw a deep line in the sand between themselves and the Globetrotters. Considering the Globetrotters are the MOST ATHLETIC team in the game and also possess the BEST TEAMWORK of the remaining contestants……this may not have been the wisest of moves for the brothers.

*The brothers seemed genuinely ashamed of their fight at the hay challenge. A lot of emotion which covered YEARS before this Race was catharsed at the Mat. Moments like this exemplify the GENUINE (not “made for TV”) impact that this Race can have on relationships.

*The Globetrotters are officially the FUNNIEST team of the season. Hands down. Our particular favorite moment of the episode was when the duo discussed NAMES for their Travelocity Gnome, with Big Easy naming him “Louisiana Shorty!”

*Brian & Ericka are the COMEBACK KIDS of the season. Once again, they defy the odds and finish favorably. Maybe all that karma that Brian has been saving up since Episode #1 is beginning to pay off………..

*WE STILL MISS ZEV & JUSTIN! AND NO WE AREN’T GETTING OVER THEM!
