Opening in limited release this weekend is Precious, a film that’s had Oscar buzz since it premiered at Sundance way back in January (when it used to be called Push before that Dakota Fanning movie took it and forced the change to Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire). It’s a jaw-dropping story of a one girl’s journey out of complete and utter darkness into some kind of light. Claireece “Precious” Jones (Gabourey Sidibe) is a teenage girl in 1987 Harlem who lives with her constantly abusive slave-driving mother (Mo’Nique), who has been impregnated by her absentee father for the second time, and who can’t even read or write. But there’s more going on behind her eyes than just horror and despair, and when she gets a chance to go to an alternative school, she just might be able to change her life into something worth living.
