Hello Everyone!

Last night’s Episode #6 took our teams to one of the Amazing Race’s favorite destinations: AMSTERDAM. This episode not only entertained us, but brought back memories of our own Amazing Race experience. Let’s get started with today’s BLOG!

**********************************************************
EPISODE 6 —– AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS
**********************************************************

The show began with teams departing from the Pitstop in Dubai, United Arab Emirates enroute to Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Dating couple Meghan & Cheyne, being the first team to arrive at the Pitstop in the previous episode, were the first to depart, followed closely by poker girls Tiffany & Maria.

After arriving at the airport, the Meghan & Cheyne discovered that the earliest flight to Amsterdam departed at Midnight. One by one, each of the remaining five teams arrived at the airport and booked flights on the same flight to Amsterdam.

*****************************************************
SAM & DAN “COME OUT” OF THE CLOSET
*****************************************************

With SEVERAL hours to kill before the midnight flight, the teams passed the time with fun, fluffy conversation. Flight Time & Big Easy recounted to the group how they “psyched out” Mika at the waterslide. Also, brothers Sam & Dan “came out” to the group that they are gay. The others teams received this news with warmth and friendly laughter. We have to wonder how many times and in how many situations previously in life that the two brothers have had to come out like this!

Upon arriving in Amsterdam, the first clue of the day instructed teams to drive themselves to Afsluitdijk, to find the Lely Monument and their next clue. It was at this moment that married couple Brian & Ericka encountered the first of MANY difficulties they would face on this day. Brian was unable to figure out how to put his “luxury car” into gear. Brian finally went and asked a local person how to work the car, and was able to get things into motion.

Team by team began to arrive at the Monument, with Brian & Ericka far behind at this point. The clue at the monument instructed the teams to drive to Martinitoren, the tallest building in the city of Groningen.

*******************************************
ROADBLOCK – COUNT THE BELLS
*******************************************

Meghan & Cheyne and Sam & Dan both arrived at the Martinitoren almost simultaneously, where they were confronted by a ROADBLOCK. In this week’s Roadblock, one team member would need to walk up the winding staircases of the tall building while counting all of the BELLS embedded within and at the top of it. If they counted the correct number – 62 – the piano player in the tower would grant them their next clue.

Sam and Meghan volunteered to tackle the Roadblock and wisely decided to work together. As they climbed the staircase, Sam joked that he was glad he “did the Stairmaster back at home!” When they got to the top of the tower, the bells started to RING and RING LOUDLY…..which was deafening for Sam and Meghan as they attempted to cover their ears. Amidst the confusion, Matt slipped past Sam and Meghan, delivering the correct number of 62 to the piano player and launching himself and his father into first place.

With the clue in hand, father and son Gary & Matt discovered they would need to drive to the town of

Vierhuizen de Marne to find a large windmill.

**************************************************************************
SAM KEEPS THE ALLIANCE WITH TIFFANY & MARIA INTACT
**************************************************************************

The collaboration between Sam and Meghan worked very well, as they too concluded that the correct number was 62 bells. As Sam and Meghan made their way down the stairs, Sam whispered the correct number of 62 to Tiffany, which allowed her to finish the task without actually counting the bells!

Sam justified his decision to share this information with Tiffany, saying it was important to keep the alliance intact, and that when it comes down to it, he and Dan can definitely beat the poker girls.

*******************************************************
ERICKA STRUGGLES AT THE BELL TOWER
*******************************************************

When Ericka stepped into the bell tower, you could just tell the poor girl was not having fun. She hated the dark, murkey environment of the tower, yet tried her best to count the bells. She made her first incorrect guess at 43 bells. She kept trying to count them again and again, as literally every team passed her by and completed the task.

Despite now being firmly in LAST PLACE, Brian never lost faith in his wife Ericka. He kept saying to himself over and over again that he knew she was trying her best and giving it her all.

*************************************************************************
DUTCH DETOUR – FARMER’S GAME OR FARMER’S DANCE
*************************************************************************

Sam & Dan arrived at the windmill in first place, where they discovered a DETOUR. The Detour choice was FARMER’S GAME or FARMER’S DANCE. In both choices, teams would need to put traditional (i.e. exaggerated) Dutch costumes – one male costume and one female costume for the two. They would then need to ride dutch bicycles to the start of the Detour. In FARMER’S GAME, teams would need to find a COLD creek, strip down to their Dutch underwear, and swim across the creek. Then, using golf clubs shaped like wooden Dutch shoes, teams would need to complete 3 holes of golf, finishing each hole in 8 stroked or less. In FARMER’S DANCE, teams would need to ring a “carnival bell” by hitting it with a huge hammer. Then, they would need to learn a Dutch folk dance, perform the dance correctly, and finish off by eating a salted herring fish with onions.

*******************************************************************************************
TIME FOR DAN AND GARY TO CROSS DRESS — BUT ITS NOTHING KINKY
*******************************************************************************************

As the teams began to put on the Dutch costumes, Sam and Matt made sure they snatched the MALE costumes, leaving the FEMALE costumes for their respective partners Dan and Gary. Dan shrugged off his cross-dressing as a necessary mean to beating Meghan & Cheyne. The older Gary lamented that he had “dressed as a woman before” but only for “pranks and Halloween, nothing kinky.” GOD where was this task when we Raced?????? :0)

******************************************
YEP – ERICKA’S STILL COUNTING
******************************************

Back at the bell tower, poor Ericka was still stuck counting and recounting……and coming up with the INCORRECT number of bells. The girl became increasingly frustrated which devolved into a state of despair…..and almost panic. At one point, Ericka actually exited the tower to seek solace from Brian. Brian showed great patience and love in this moment, as he took Ericka aside and told her to “take a 5 minute break” before trying the count again. Brian’s support worked magic —— as Ericka correctly counted the bells on her next try. Brian rewarded the now cheerfully-tearful Ericka with a hug and told her “I’m so proud of you, baby. We’re not done yet.”

************************************
SAM & DAN ARE SWINGERS
************************************

Over at the creek, Sam & Dan stripped down to their undies and swam across the ice COLD creek. Both the brothers and Meghan & Cheyne arrived at the golf course neck and neck. While Meghan struggled with the golfing, the brothers excelled, finishing the three holes on their first attempt. Sam & Dan then received their final clue, instructing them to ride their bikes to the PITSTOP at Zoutkamp Harbor.

**********************************************************
FINALLY —- SAM & DAN SCORE FIRST PLACE
**********************************************************

Sam & Dan arrived at Phil’s mat and received the news that they were indeed the FIRST PLACE team! For their victory, Phil rewarded the brothers with a sand buggy. Sam mentioned to Phil, “Cheyne & Meghan had been first the past two times. It was nice to kind of take them off their throne and get a win for us.”

The brothers proved two things on this episode: #1 they ARE serious contenders for the Million Dollar Prize and #2 Meghan & Cheyne are NOT invincible.

***************************************
THEY PLAY POKER, NOT GOLF
***************************************

Back at the Dancing Detour, the poker girls Maria & Tiffany tried over and over again to hit the “carnival bell” with the hammer but time and time again were unable to do it. After over 30 tries, the duo gave up and decided to go after the golfing detour. Sadly, the girls struggled with the golf almost as badly as they had at the carnival bell.

****************************************************
FLIGHT TIME & BIG EASY GO SOUL TRAIN
****************************************************

Over at the Dance Detour, globetrotters Flight Time & Big Easy hit the hammer and rung the carnival bell with ease. They also learned the Dutch dance amazingly fast and shocked the judges with their slick moves. It was a comical moment watching the Dutch ladies dancing with the HUGE Flight Time & Big Easy. The two then begrudgingly ate up the slated herring fish and then made their way to Phil’s mat where they checked in third place.

*****************************************************
BRIAN & ERICKA WALK, INSTEAD OF RIDE
*****************************************************

Still in last place, Brian & Ericka arrived at the Detour point, but didn’t see the bicycles that teams were supposed to ride. Instead of riding to the next area of tasks, the two started WALKING the long trek, in the uncomfortable WOODEN Dutch shoes that teams had to wear. Poor Ericka once again had a meltdown as her feet were KILLING her from the tower challenge and now moreso in the wooden shoes.

***********************************************************
TIFFANY & MARIA KEEP SWITCHING DETOURS
***********************************************************

Tiffany & Maria had no luck whatsoever at the golf course so they swam back across the creek and went for the carnival bell again. After over 70 tries, the severely weakened girls once again gave up on the carnival bell and just took a moment to tearfully embrace.

Now at the Dance Detour, Brian hit the carnival bell on his first try. Now dancing together for the challenge, you could see the romantic spark between the couple beginning to reignite. Ericka laughed and smiled for the first time this day. Ericka even remarked that “That was the moment I totally fell in love with him again.” Brian & Ericka then received their final clue, directing them to the Piststop.

***************************************************************************************
BRIAN & ERICKA ARRIVE AT THE PITSTOP……BUT RECEIVE PENALTY
***************************************************************************************

When Brian & Ericka arrived at the Mat, Phil informed them they were in 5th place. The couple was elated, only to find their smiles premature, as Phil notified them they would be receiving a 30 minute penalty for not riding the bicycles on the Detour. Even in this moment of danger, Brian held strong and encouraged his wife not to worry. Phil then had the team sit on the side for 30 minutes, then they were allowed to check in safely.

***********************************************************************
PHIL HAS A “SPECIAL DELIVERY” FOR TIFFANY & MARIA
***********************************************************************

Back at the Golf Detour, Tiffany & Maria came to the tearful conclusion that there was no way they would be able to complete either Detour choice. Phil soon arrived on the scene, leaving his Mat to personally deliver the bad news to the poker girls. When Phil approached them, Tiffany admitted “We do not foresee that we will be able to finish this challenge with this weather. We are quitting the race and as a result understand that we will be eliminated.’ Maria had nothing but kind words for her partner, recalling “Tiffany has been my hero this entire race. I see her as completely invincible, but I have to remember that at the end of day we can only do so much.”

The poker girls were a fun duo to watch and an early “fan favorite” of the season. Their dynamic and background together was something all-new for the Race and we will miss their optimism and feminine-charm! Competition is in the BLOOD for these two and we expect the Race experience to only intensify their zeal when they return to the poker circuit.

*******************************
FINAL ORDER OF FINISH
*******************************

1. Sam & Dan
2. Meghan & Cheyne
3. Flight Time & Big Easy
4. Gary & Matt
5. Brian & Ericka
6. Tiffany & Maria [ELIMINATED]

*******************************
OTHER TIDBITS TO NOTE
*******************************

*Amsterdam has been visited on more than one season of the Amazing Race. Anyone wonder why? It might have something to do with Race creator Bertram van Munster……who is Dutch himself!

*This episode brought back memories —- as our destination for Leg #2 of our own Race was Amsterdam. Much like this episode, we too fell pray to those #$%#$ Dutch bicycles.

*The “alliance” came to an end on this episode. Sam & Dan and Tiffany & Maria had enjoyed a symbiotically-beneficial relationship thus far in the Race. We have to wonder how the brothers felt upon receiving the news that the girls were eliminated…….

*Meghan & Cheyne had yet ANOTHER strong leg and were right on the heels of first place finishers Sam & Dan. Without question, the Million Dollar prize might come down to a footrace between these two power teams.

*Flight Time & Big Easy continue to play the game well….and are providing this season with some much needed comic relief!

*Gary & Matt are such a demure, non-threatening team…..but continue to play so well. We are down to the Final 5 so the next episode should be a good glimpse into their future in the game, or lack thereof.

*How about a “PARTNER OF THE SEASON AWARD” for Brian?!?!? Through THICK, THIN, and a TON of frustrating moments, brother supported his wife Ericka with kindness and patience during nearly every moment. This type of support system becomes even more pivotal as the Race progresses and the Legs become increasingly difficult.

*WE STILL MISS ZEV & JUSTIN! We can’t help but feel their absence each week. The genuine dynamic and spirit between them has not been replaced by any other team.
