Here’s what’s opening in theaters nationwide this weekend. There’s the new teen-lit vampire franchise Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant, along with the new-look classic cartoon robot hero Astro Boy. Straight-laced Darren (Chris Massoglia) and troubled loner Steve (Josh Hutcherson) are high school friends who find themselves invited to a mysterious freak show. When Darren steals ringmaster and vampire Larten Crepsley’s (John C. Reilly) talented spider and it poisons Steve, Darren allows himself to be converted to vampirism by Crepsley in exchange for saving Steve’s life. But Steve has always been obsessed with vampires and is jealous of Darren’s new life with the peaceful commune of freaks run by Crepsley and his beloved Madame Truska (Salma Hayek) – so much so that he joins the side of the evil vampires – the Vampanese, who relish their power and enjoy killing their prey. Thus the two friends are now bitter enemies on opposite sides of a vampire war orchestrated by the corpulent Mr. Destiny (Michael Cerveris).

The original cartoon series from the 1950s has been called the forerunner of the anime style and the character has even been termed the Japanese Mickey Mouse. Now, Astro Boy is getting a modern-day makeover with CG animation and a contemporary feel. It’s the story of a super scientist named Dr. Tenma (Nicolas Cage) who creates an artificial duplicate of the son he lost in a tragic accident. When this robot doesn’t act exactly like Toby, Tenma tries to get rid of him – and the resulting escape and journey into self-discovery turns this boy into a true superhero.
